Newborn Cloth Diapering and Diaper Reviews

When Destructo was born, I could not wait to see his little fluffy butt in his first cloth diaper.  We decided to wait until his umbilical cord had fallen off as most of my diapers were too tall and would have went over top of it.  Plus I was exhausted and overwhelmed after my marathon labor.  (You can read Kai's birth story here.)

He was nine days old when we put him in his first cloth diaper.  I had decided that it would be a Lil Joey fire truck diaper..  These diapers fit very well (better than any other newborn diaper) and actually had a button so that you could button them below the umbilical cord.  They were adorable and all in ones which was nice.  But they leaked 95% of the time he wore them.  I think it was a combination of his chicken scrawny legs and also the fact that he was a very fast pee er and they just couldn't absorb fast enough.  The other downfall was that they took a very long time to dry (like a full 24 hours.)

The next diaper I tried was the Grovia All in One Newborn diaper.  This diaper was never a good fit for Destructo.  The tightest setting still had gapping around his legs.  They were very absorbent and did a good job even with the fit never being right.  I would say they only leaked maybe half the time and most of these leaks were leg leaks.  I think they would have worked better as he got bigger.  I loved that these diapers were organic cotton inserts.  I struggled as first with the soaker and finally made a taco like shape with it and this seemed to work well.  These dried faster than the Lil Joey since even though they were an all in one, you could flip the inner out and let the two parts dry separately.  These diapers were also super cute which is very important in my book, but due to the leg leaks they don't get the highest ranking.  Glad I didn't discard this company totally after using the newborn diapers.  I love their one size hybrid diapers (see this post here.)

You can see the gapping around the legs in this Grovia newborn diaper.  But the owls are adorable.

The third type of diaper that I tried were Fuzzibunz hook and loop and X-small in snaps.  I had very few leaks with the hook and loop kind, but since I got them in size small they were a little big on Destructo at first.  They absorbed well, but the aplix was crappy and by the third washing it was starting to roll up on the corners and not stick as well.  The few leaks I had with these were because they just came undone.  The snaps diapers worked well and I had these in extra small so they fit very well.  The only downfall to these were that for some reason Destructo got red marks on his legs and stomach.  Oh and that I discovered that for diapering a newborn, I much preferred velcro to snaps.  It enabled me to easily get a perfect fit every time.  I would say that overall these diapers only leaked maybe 10% of the time.  A huge pro to this brand was that they were actual pocket diapers so you could customize the absorbency and they dried extremely quickly.

Finally, the diaper that I wish I had bought exclusively for use during the newborn stage was the Bumgenius X-Small newborn diaper.  They were an all in one, but absorbed a lot and dried fairly quickly in half a day max.  They were all in aplix so getting a proper fit was easy.  These fit Destructo basically from birth on and even did justice on his chicken little legs.  I nearly never had leaks until he got closer to ten pounds and needed to move to the one size diapers.  There were next to no cons to these diapers except for the fact that they only come in boring colors.  No cute owls or fire truck designs for these diapers.

Look at that little baby foot and goodness was he a baldie
Some tips I advise for newborn cloth diapering are:  1)  You don't have to spray them at all.  Formula and breast milk are water soluble.
2)  When you think you got the diaper on tight enough, get it tighter.  The red marks will not hurt the baby and quickly fade away.
3)  Check the legs for gapping.  This was the number one cause of leaks when he was an itty bitty.
4)  Don't assume that the diapers you love or hate in the newborn diapers will hold true for one size diapers.  I didn't care that much for the Grovia newborns and love the one size Grovia hybrids.
5)  Figure out a washing routine that works for you.  I have always tried to wash every 2-3 days.  I did have to supplement with disposables when he was in newborn diapers because although I had 16 newborn size diapers, only about half of those actually worked for Destructo.
6)  Be ready for a number of leaks.  Cloth diapering is a learning curve and I had to figure it out as I went.
7)  If you have a boy, point his "peepee" down.  Just trust me on this one.
8)  Personally I think you need about 18 diapers minimum to cloth diaper full time and this would be with washing nearly every day.

We also tried a few other diapers during the newborn to one size transition and I will eventually get around to doing full reviews on them. They were Bottombumpers size small and Thirsties duo diaper size one.
When and if Destructo version 2.0 ever makes an appearance in our lives, I will buy more newborn Bumgenius diapers to make sure I have 18 total.  I might also try fitted and covers or prefolds and covers.  I have heard great things about cloth diapering itty bittys in both of these diapering systems.

Feel free to shoot me an email or leave me a comment with any questions you might have.  I am not a pro by any means, but am happy to try to help.

    1. Yeah I plan on using cloth even sooner next time. Basically from the time we are home from the hospital. It is just so much cheaper than buying disposables.

  3. I never used cloth diapers when mine was little. My good friend did and I know it took her a few trials to find the brand/kind that worked for them. She really struggles with fearing they were on too tight when she was so little. Great tips!!

  4. BGs are the favorites in our house. Surprisingly the next runners up for good ones are a few I've gotten online from SAHMs.

    1. I really like one my mom got Destructo for Christmas which was from an etsy shop. I also had a friend that made me a newborn diaper that I really liked. I really wish I was creative/talented enough to make all my own diapers.

  5. These are such great tips and thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on all the different brands you guys tried!!! We cloth diaper in our house but have only used the BumGenius Elementals...we've been thrilled with them and our little girl will be 2 in October and they are still holding up wonderfully!!!

    1. I really want to try one of these, but don't want to buy more diapers since I have far more than I need. I keep hoping I will find one cheap on one of the swap sites. I found that I really like the cotton or hemp on the insides as opposed to microfiber after months of use. I have no stink problems with the natural fibers. But overall my BG 4.0's are holding up well minus the leg elastic. I need to replace that pretty soon.

  7. I am so happy that you linked this CD post up to Monday Mom Musings today. I love reading about others' experiences with CDs, since I love them myself, and am always trying to give ppl good advice. We used mostly WAHM covers and prefolds on our daughter as a newborn, which worked excellently, except for the fact that I wished I'd bought one size larger prefolds than the nb size, which don't absorb much. We ended up using Hempbabies doublers with them most of the time.

    1. I am currently using cotton prefolds as inserts in my pocket diapers (the infant size) and they work great. At night, I double it with a Joey Bunz hemp insert and the only leaks I have are because my leg elastics really need replacing.

I mostly do the cloth diapering posts in the hope that a new to cloth diapering mom finds them and they can help her. I was so confused at first.

  8. Great post! I had a real variety of newborn diapers for my son. I totally agree with you about not letting what you like/dislike for NB diapers affect what you try when they get bigger. For example, we had a lot of Kissaluvs fitteds in size 0 that I loved. But once my son grew out of them, I tried some size 1s, but they were no longer absorbent enough as he got bigger! My diaper stash has changed a few times along the way.

    1. Thanks! If I was rich, I would go to all Grovia hybrids and Swaddlebees Simplex one size. I love that I don't have to unstuff the diaper before washing.

  9. We are a cloth diapering family too! I started using them when my two year old was a few weeks old. With our newest baby (6 weeks tomorrow) I used them from birth.

  11. I used cloth diapers for my kiddos. Since my craftyness works out sometimes I chose to sew them. I bought tons of patterns and sewed tons of diapers. My fave was the KCK because it was a one size fits all because it folds down and velcros and is a pocket

    1. Yep I love one size pockets even though I couldn't sew a straight line to save my life. Cloth diapering is so much fun.

  12. This makes me feel better about possibly CDing a (possible) baby #2 as a newborn. We didn't start CDing our LO until she was six months old, so I've already been thinking about wether or not we will use CDs as a new born if we have another. We use mainly BG's here so I think that is what we would use for a newbie too! Thanks for all the info!

    1. I highly recommend cloth diapering a newborn. It would have been so expensive when Kai was little since I averaged 15 diapers a day since he was the poopingest baby ever.

    1. I know. I miss the days of breastfed poop. No spraying or nastiness, just toss them right in the pail. My diapers all still looked brand new at six months when we started solids.

    1. They were my favorites although next time around I do plan to attempt prefolds and covers as well since everyone talks so highly of those for the newborn stage. Feel free to email/facebook message me with any questions you might have about cloth diapering. I am a bit of an addict and really like talking to others and helping new moms learn the ropes of cloth diapering.

  20. This is one of your many posts that I have bookmarked! I think I'm going to do mostly prefolds and covers with some fitteds for the newborn stage just to save money. I did get a fuzzibunz xs and a bumgenius newborn at a cloth diaper sale though. Out of curiosity, what did you do about the umbilical cord stump with the bumgenius diapers? Seems like they are high on the rise and would cover the stump. Does covering the stump really matter? Thanks for all your great posts!

    1. I actually wasn't cloth diapering until after Destructo's fell off. His fell off super early on at eight or nine days. This next time I plan on cloth diapering pretty much as soon as I am home from the hospital and will just tuck the front of the diaper down like you would a sposie.

  21. Great tips. Number 2 is totally true - it can always be tighter. :) And, I always like to point out that we had just as many leaks with disposables. Diaper leaks are just part of a life with a newborn. :)
