I promised a follow up on my son's picky toddler eating and what I am doing to try to combat it. I received many good comments and have tried a few of those ideas and a few of my own and even a few pinterest ideas. I really just loved the support from all my wonderful readers who made me realize I am not alone in this starvation process.
Here are a few things I have tried thus far. I made him grilled cheese with small amounts of meat (since as I mentioned in the above post Destructo's biggest strike of all is protein of any kind.) This was a huge failure after the first bite. He must have tasted the chicken and wanted nothing to do with the sandwich after that.
I did a makeshift muffin tin lunch for him (since I don't actually own a muffin tin) and this was somewhat successful. He ate the crackers, a little guacomole, fruit, and veggies. Overall he ate much more than he had been, but still no protein.
The next day I decided to try this again with a cute Veggie Tales plate that he could see once he had eaten his muffin cups and set them aside. He seemed to like that he could pick up the things he hates (pasta) and move it aside. He didn't even want it on his plate. But overall this lunch was a massive failure as he ate two bites of bears and the banana. I even tried to let him have a picnic in the living room thinking maybe this would be fun for him and he would eat. It ended when he threw a fit and stepped in his food and almost tracked cherry juice on my living room rug.
The next night for dinner we were having meatloaf. I decided to get all creative and make him meatloaf cupcakes. I made meatloaf with mashed potatoes and lima beans to decorate it. He refused to even touch it because it had redness that was made of ketchup. Mommy fail there. I have to remember if I make these again not to glaze them with the glaze. He literally would not even so much as touch them with one finger. But hey they made me a nice little bite size snack the next day. He did eat lima beans for dinner that night so hey I guess I should count my blessings.
So basically this post is a huge post about how I have failed to get my kid to eat. But I did find that he likes praise and likes being a big boy so sitting with him and praising him when he uses his fork came into play.
I have two small toddler size metal forks that I have been using with him. I need to buy a few more so I always have one clean. He loves to eat and then look at me for a reaction. He even stole my fork at the restaurant the other night and ate with a normal adult sized fork. Fingers crossed this continues working. I have no problem clapping for each and every bite he gets in his mouth if he is eating (and by eating I mean eating and not waking me up in the middle of the night because he is hungry. Momma loves sleeping.)
A few things I plan on trying in the next few days are more creative ways to arrange his food to make it cute and appealing to him, a few recipes that are hidden protein sources, and possibly getting a small toddler sized folding table for him so he can sit in a chair like a big boy if I can find one cheap enough.
So here is my question for you guys, what foods are your kids favorites that are unexpected? As I mentioned earlier, lima beans and peas (especially if they are cold) are one of Kai's go to's. What a weirdo. He also likes broccoli.
Play on the weird! My girls LOVE the "weird" veggies, too! They love spinach artichoke dip. Have you tried any recipes in the Deceptively...whatever cookbook? I have heard really good things about it.
ReplyDeleteHave you tried rolling something her like in deli meat? Gross, but we did pickle spears in turkey with cream cheese for a few months, when my picky would eat that.
Does he peanut butter?
My pick y also when through a phase of only eating hot dogs, half the bun, and ape loads of fruit and veggies. I talked to our pediMD about it and she said it was fine for a few months, it was a phase. If it lasted years, she would be worried, but she was right and it lasted about six months. Now, picky is open to other foods as well.
Ohh I will have to check out that cookbook. I had never heard of it.
DeleteI was thinking about making pinwheels for him. I keep meaning to check out the lunch meats at the grocery store. I would like to find one that is lower in nitrates for him. Gotta remember that tomorrow when I shop.
He does eat peanut butter thank goodness and eggs so at least he gets protein there.
I am really hoping this is a picky phase that is being prompted by getting molars. We shall see. Thanks for all the suggestions.
what great little meals you made, annoying though when it doesn't work, right? I have to compliment him all the time, sometimes I leave his food on the table and an hour later he'll eat it. He LOVES to be the one to decide when to eat *rolls eyes*
ReplyDeleteDinosaur loves onions...cooked or raw... he loves them. but then again he also will eat spoonfuls of guacamole or hummus, so I shouldn't be surprised.
Onions are such a surprising things for a toddler to love. Kai loves guac, but hated hummus the one time I offered to him. Hey if compliments work, I will dole out the compliments like tic tacs.
DeleteTry the pinwheels - my daughter loves them in school lunch because they don't get soggy but they both think they are fun. I do cream cheese with finely chopped deli ham in it, rolled in the tortilla, then cut into fours. I also make ones like that with peanut butter, raisins and a little honey that seem to be popular. Really - other than the waking up hungry at night - I wouldn't worry too much. Mine both went through it right about that age. One skipped purees all together and the other won't eat anything he thinks is a green pepper or spinach. Funny thing is - if daddy says "you can do it, just 5 bites" and does a big countdown of how many bites and sometimes scoops it for him and feeds him or feeds him from his own plate before he gets more fruit or a little juice or whatever he wants at the time - then he ends up being tricked into eating the whole thing... Go with what works at the time and don't worry too much about the long term manners, etc.
ReplyDeleteYeah I am not as worried about the nutritional end of it since he is still nursing a few times a day. But I can't keep getting up at 4 AM and then working all day and commuting two hours per day. That is why I am trying so hard to get him eating well. The last three days have been much better. He has eaten at least a little bit of whatever meat we are having for dinner each night. In fact, the other day he ate an entire pork chop by himself! Yay for small miracles. I am definitely going to try the pinwheels though. I hadn't even thought to try raisins and peanut butter. He loves peanut butter.
DeleteThat is a great idea. Thanks for sharing!

I am so wowed by your muffin cup idea! Great job! My kids are ridiculously fussy eaters too. I try not to stress about it too much, but like you said, I sort of like sleeping, so...and seriously, how dare you, Mommy, with the ketchup redness!
ReplyDeleteI mean meat loaf shouldn't have glaze at all. It should just be a lump of hamburger. Duh. I get so angry at 3 AM when he is signing eat, eat. I feel like screaming you should have eaten at all three of the meals that were offered to you. :)
DeleteI say, you're doing wonderfully!! I wouldn't have thought of so many options..okay maybe I would, but I wouldn't do a darn thing about them!!
ReplyDeleteDoes he like muffins? You can always sneak in all kinds of things in there..make it predominantly broccoli-flavored if he likes that vile stuff... lol. Also, does he like smoothies? You can make a protein shake with lots of berries to hide the taste!
He does like muffins so that is my plan to make breads and muffins with protein in them. I need to start making fruit smoothies to go with lunch with my whey protein. I know he will drink them and then if he eats lunch added bonus.
DeleteDon't feel bad, just keep trying and hopefully he'll get better as he gets older. My daughter has really improved over the past 6 months, I think because we haven't made a big deal out of it or turned it into a power struggle. She is not into protein either, besides dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets with ketchup lol. I give her smoothies with protein powder in them a lot.
ReplyDeleteI hope he gets better. I really think it is molars though since he has never been super picky before. I bet he would like dino chicken nuggets since he likes dinos. Do they make car shaped chicken nuggets because I know he would be all over that?
DeleteOh man I feel you my oldest is a picky eater and it makes cooking so hard. I try a lot of muffin type things and hide the things she does not like in them, like pureed veggies (I wonder if you can puree meat to add to recipes). For you maybe you can try a pancake muffin with finely ground up sausage for protein (just a thought) Good luck I hope you get some great ideas! And Thanks for sharing on the We Made That Linky!
ReplyDeleteI have often wondered about pureeing meats. He has been doing much better though the last couple of days since I have been lavishing him with praise for using a fork or for trying new things. I feel so silly, but it seems to be working for now.
